A very large conifer species reaching up to 90m, it is named for the botanist David Douglas who was responsible for introducing many of our commercial forestry species. Its cones are very distinctive, each scale having a 3-pointed bract which is found on other tree. The strong timber is used for pit-props and telegraph poles as well as for construction and it almost rivals the spruces for its rate of growth.
