The ideal hedge species, its foliage a deep green through the summer and turning a copper colour in the autumn, the beech also tends to keep its leaves through the winter months until the new green ones push them off in the spring. Its smooth grey bark makes it an attractive standard tree, out of the hedgerow. It is quite hardy, and will cope with most soil types, except for heavy waterlogging but is ideally suited to a lighter soil and partial sun.
