Taking its name from a supposed resemblance in the scent of its crushed foliage and that of the unrelated poisonous flowering plant, it can be identified by its jumbled and markedly different length needles growing along the twig in a random fashion. Its three seed-leaves are diagnostic in the early seeding stage. Western hemlock is a highly shade-tolerant tree.
