Rowan is a quick-growing tree, commonly seen here in the highlands but less common further south. Like the birches, it is known as pioneer species meaning that it is often amongst the first species to colonize previously un-colonized land. Pioneer species are by definition usually very hardy and for that reason an ideal choice for the beginner tree enthusiast to grow! It is characterized by its abundance of bright red (sometimes yellow or orange) berries in the autumn and its compound leaf which is superficially similar to the unrelated Ash (Fraxinus excelsior); hence it’s other common name.
