Sessile oak can be distinguished from the closely related English oak from the acorn’s lack of stalks; sessile oak is generally the more common oak species in upland areas which has led to it being known as the Welsh oak in Wales where it is the national tree. It is not as long-lived as robur, living up to 300 years and also not quite as beneficial to wildlife with only a fraction of the amount of dependant species of insect for example, though it will tolerate poorer conditions.
