Bird Cherry (Prunus padus)
A less common cherry than the closely related gean, this tree produces 4-6 inch long racemes of white flowers which give off an almond like scent in abundance. Birds are attracted by the dozen to the black fruits that follow, hence the name! The tree prefers base-rich soil, often occurring in the wild in wet-flushed areas alongside alder (Alnus glutinosa).
