Dwarf Birch (Betula nana)
Mountain Birch, Betula nana, is a species which has a UK native range restricted to the uplands of Scotland. It shares some characteristics with Downy and Silver Birch, such as needing good light and preferring poor soils. However, mountain birch is very slow growing and rarely gains height above about 1m. It can be considered to be a species under threat of extinction in many areas and so is often planted for conservation reasons.
