European Larch (Larix decidua)
A deciduous conifer, the European larch reaches around 45m in height and is commonly planted as a commercial timber species. Boat makers cherish its knot-free wood and it is generally one of these which are tossed as a caber at the Highland Games. It is highly tolerant of high-altitude, exposed positions – able to withstand arctic temperatures and commonly found at or near the tree line (the altitudinal limit at which trees can grow) in the Alps.
