Field Maple (Acer campestre)
The field maple is the U.K.’s only native maple, its natural range extending up into Southern Scotland. It turns a golden-yellow colour in the autumn and its palmately lobed leaves are distinguished from those of the closely related sycamore by their deeper, more rounded lobes. As a rule it prefers moist, fertile soils and is usually found as a compact tree around 8m – ideal for small to medium gardens.
