Gean or Wild Cherry (Prunus avium)
The gean, when mature is a medium sized tree characterised by distinctive “tiger stripes” on the bark and small, astringent fruits quite unlike their cultivated counterparts. Suitable to most soil types, it will prefer a sunny spot, not too windy and avoid North orientations or cold winter places. The fragranced white or pink blossom explodes in early spring, before the leaves, followed by the small fruits in July / August.
