Gorse or Whin (Ulex europeaus)
Gorse, although classed with the broadleaves, the gorse shrub is notable for its vicious spines, which are modified leaves; making it an excellent intruder-deterring hedge species. It is well known for being able to flower all year round, though its yellow blossoms are usually most abundant in early summer. It is a member of the pea family, and is able to fix nitrogen improving the ground for other species in the hedge.
