Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
The staple of the rural hedgerow throughout the UK, the common hawthorn is also well known as one of the heralds of summer, its white flowers brightening up hedgerows throughout May / June. It’s short and stocky form and numerous spines making it an ideal deterrent for livestock and human alike. The hawthorn is well known as being highly beneficial for birdlife, with species such as the waxwing and thrushes flocking to eat the bright red fruits.
